Speech Video 10.1

Hello,

It is helpful when a speaker refers to the audience as "we, us, and you" because it makes a clear statement that the speaker is a normal person just like the people in the audience.  Instead of feeling that the speaker is superior, it gives the audience a sense of comfortableness.  The separation between speaker and audience disappears, leaving the audience feeling more comfortable with the speaker.  The audiences' guard is down which allows an instant connection to the speaker.  Asking the audience to "visualize" something is very powerful.  It gives the audience an opportunity to think and put themselves in another place.  Inviting the audience to imagine something is an excellent way to connect with the audience.  To put yourself in a situation that you normally would not allows a person to use critical thinking skills.  Humor has connected me to many speakers.  A speaker who makes me feel like I am just the same as they are, and one who can  make me laugh is a speaker worth listening to!

  1. Like I said in my own post, when giving a speech, it is a good idea to give it as though you were having a conversation with the audience. By utilizing the words "we, us, and you" this can be easily accomplished. It helps bridge the gap between the stage and the seat and draws the audience in to what is being said. I don't necessarily think that asking the audience to visualize something is effective for me as the listener. I am sure that I have heard public speakers who have utilized it but I can't think of any precise instance which leads me to this conclusion.

  2. You make a good point highlighting the dynamic of the separation between speaker and audience that is created by the not using audience-centered language. One can understand how feeling comfortable with a speaker can enhance the engagement of the audience member. Thus, enhancing the effectiveness of the speech from both the speaker and audience’s perspectives. The use of inclusive language is also another form of langue a speaker should use to ensure he or she is not singly any persons or group out. . Inclusive language makes the audience feel like they are part of the group. It also shows that the speaker understands what we all, as humans, have in common.
