Sea of Persuasion
I never realized how much persuasion I actually
have on a daily basis in my life. For
example, I started my morning off by making some coffee, taking the dog for a
short walk, doing homework, trying to save money on my energy bill, and AT
& T Uverse trying to persuade me to schedule a “last effort” technical
repair service. I persuaded myself to
have three cups of coffee this morning so I could get through the day. The dog persuaded me into going for a walk first
thing this morning. During the walk, I
noticed signs posted persuading dog owners to pick up after their pets. I persuaded myself to leave the air condition
off today so I could save money on my monthly electric bill. Lastly, I’ve been having problems with AT
& T Uverse for the past month, and when I called to cancel, the customer
service representative tried to persuade to schedule a “last effort” technical
service repair. Thankfully, I am not the type of consumer that has to have the greatest and latest. I tune out most advertisers. I like to pick and choose how I want to spend my money. I'm not easily persuaded.

It is crazy to think about, but it is almost impossible to get away from persuasion. You don't even realize it most of the time. If everyone broke down their daily routine like you did, then they would see how much they are really presented with the idea of being persuaded, or are being persuaded in just one day. The numbers would be crazy. One thing you mentioned that i didn't take into consideration is how we persuade ourselves to make even the smallest decisions every day, such as "turning off the air conditioner." That is a very good point that you made. Great post.
ReplyDeleteIt is so interesting to read your post, especially your dog persuaded you to take a walk. I don’t know which kind of technic it used to persuade you. But you remind of me that my cat uses to lie down a particular place with a pair of round eyes to persuade me to play with her. Or, she would persistently surround and lightly rub my legs to get her meal. Even though they do not talk, animals do communicate to humankinds with their body language. In the same way, when we try to persuade someone, we also employ our body language to reinforce our ideas. However, as you said if we stand still, no one could convince us in any way.
