Chapter 5 Post

Hello,

The importance of audience analysis is to learn as much as possible about the audience so the speaker can design messages that will appeal to the mass of the audience.  The speaker must know who he or she is talking to.  For example, is the audience primarily made-up of primarily retirees?  High school graduates?  Does the audience involve people with disabilities?  In order for the speaker to adapt to the audience, the speaker must deliver a message and communicate with an audience who is genuinely interested in receiving “relevant” messages that they can benefit and apply to their own lives.  Choosing the correct setting for your speech is also important.  For example, if you are delivering a speech to a group of first-year law students, you might want to consider giving your speech in the local law school auditorium.  For my next speech, I plan to develop a research questionnaire that will include closed- and open-ended questions that will give me more information about the audience and individual interests.  I like the idea of using a few quotes I noted in the questionnaires to ensure that I connect with the audience which will help support some of my main points.

  1. I agree that you have to take in a lot when you are preparing a speech because everyone is so diverse. I think thats a great idea to develop a research questionnaire that has many closed and opened questions. I think that when you do that all it will do will help benefit you more when prepare your speech because you will be able to know what direction your speech needs to go, to help you adapted to your auidence. I do also see that its important that you talk about things that can be taken as relevant to your auidence especially depending on the setting of your speech. I think that talking about something way off basis will not attract your auidence.

  2. I agree that it is important to make sure you know who you are speaking to when preparing a speech. You wouldn't use big words to a group of preschoolers. There is also a thought about adapting your speech while giving it. If you are me, you might try to make some jokes. If the audience does not respond to them, I would probably cut out the other ones that I had planned. The idea of using quotes in a speech is a good idea. Those I might write out completely just in case I forgot how exactly to say them.

  3. Before reading our assigned book for our class, I never knew that people used research questionnaires for their audiences. I think it is a great idea, sometimes someone will not know that much about the demographic of their audience, so a questionnaire will help one better prepare for their speech. I also like the idea of quoting from the questionnaire, it will give the audience something that they can associate with and make the speech more personal to them, and therefore acquiring their interest. I don't think I will ever need to use a research questionnaire; I am not planning on going into a career that would need to use one, but it is nice to know about them just in case.
