What I will be Taking from This Class

Where do I begin?  In my opinion, public speaking is the same if I was talking to one person or a million people.  The way in which you present yourself truly matters.  I don’t think anyone can take enough speaking and writing classes.  This class has given me so much more confidence.  I was happy to learn that there is such a thing as “ethical speaking” because a person with ethics in today’s society is not the norm.  Developing a purpose, adapting to the audience, supporting ideas were extremely helpful.  My thoughts are better organized.  This is the first time I’ve made a power point presentation, and I actually had lots of fun putting it together.  Some other important items I will be taking with me are how important “details” are in a speech.  For an example, the use of precise applicable words during a speech is critical.  It’s important because I want to be sure I am communicating properly and effectively.  Lastly, I really enjoyed presenting all four types of speeches in class.

  1. I couldn't agree more! This class has been very helpful in teaching me to build communication skills and be a more effective speaker. I also enjoyed all of the speeches, once they were over I enjoyed them more. Once I get over the anxiety I am able to reflect and appreciate the speech more. I also had fun putting together the powerpoint presentations. As our speeches progressed I was able to see what aspects from my first presentation were helpful and which techniques I could implement to make my next speech more effective. Over all I feel like I learned a lot and am very happy I took this course.

  2. I also agree with the use of details. An attentive audience will pick up on even the slightest thing that is off with your presentation. I enjoy having the power points up while I'm speaking. It's a comfort and helps to keep me on track. I also think that I can make a better impact with one. I'm showing two different things to the audience, appealing to two different senses-hearing and seeing. It gives the audience something to ponder while speaking. I found that on some of the power points, I was sitting there thinking about how I could apply that to my life.

  3. I can tell you are a natural public speaker; just like my husband to whom I’m so proud of. For me, this will never be the same, "talking to one person or a million people." My anxiety will increase with the increasing number of the audiences. Yet I totally agree with your idea that this class really helps me to “get more confident in front of audiences”, too. As everyone is unique, we all have learned various concepts from this class.
As I read your post, I found there is also an important concept, "ethical speaking, "and" the use of precise applicable words," they were equal to most important for my future communications with others. Thanks for sharing and good luck for tomorrow.

  4. I could not agree with you more about how people cannot take enough speaking and writing classes. During my career as a Branch Manager at Wells Fargo, one of the management skills we were taught were, really listening to our team members and seeking to understand before becoming understood. Shortly after applying it in the work place regularly, I began making a conscious effort to apply the listening skills outside the office. What I quickly realized was more often than not people have a difficulty expressing themselves by the use of words. So often we interpret what we here into a meaning only to find out later that we misunderstood. So, to your point, it is always beneficial to become a better speaker / communicator.
